Korla, located in Xinjiang province, also known as Kuerle in Chinese, has a history of 2,000 years in fragrant pear cultivation. Korla fragrant pears, reputed as "China's honey pears" and "prince of fruits," have been awarded many times in various domestic activities. Its fragrant pears, soft, tasty, and refreshing, have a honey aroma, a thin skin, tender flesh, and beautiful colors. The pears are not only nutritious, but also have good medicinal effects. The pears help to moisten the lungs, dispel diseases, detoxify toxicosis (poison-related disease), cure scalding, and relieve pains, and so on.
Most of the top grade fragrant pears are exported to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and other countries and regions, and the rest are shipped to the UAE, the Philippines and Canada. This year, the pears are exported to England again. Each year US$90 million is earned from the export of about 30,000 tons of pears. Kuerle has introduced some national leading firms. They have realized a warehousing and preservation capacity of 400,000 tons of fragrant pears. Over 80 percent of the fruit can be preserved for 12 months after being picked and warehoused.
Fragrant pears are grown in the Korla area of Xinjiang Province in western China, west of the Taklamgan Gobi Desert and bordering Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The area has hot, dry summers, and cold dry winters, with annual precipitation of 25 to 500 mm (1 to 20 inches), according to a USDA report. The area is watered by the Peacock River that comes from snow melt from the Tien Shan Mountains to the north.
The characters of Kuerle fragrant pear: Its fruit is small in medium weight of 80—100g and maximum is 174g. It is in reversed ovum round or spindle shape. The color of the fruit is yellow and green, and there are dark red color faints on the front side. The surface is smooth, the spot is small and unobvious. It is calyx free. The peel is thin, the pulp is white, fragile, juicy, strong sweet and fragrant, and the quality is very good. It matures in last ten days of September, can be stored in air adjustment storehouse for 12 months without change to the quality.
