Dali is located at the foot of the Cangshan Mountain by Erhai Lake, Yunnan Province. Dali is an ancient city of the Bai Autonomous Region, her name is originated from that of a local regime in history called Kingdom Dali, meaning "a state of great order" .
Owing to the climate and the soil condition of Dali, the pears which grow here are much sweeter in flavor, and have thinner skins and more tender flesh. The main growing area for Dali snow pears is on the eastern side of Erhai Lake. Every August and September in the harvest season, people come from all around to Erhai Lake to pick pears and celebrate the harvest.
Dali snow pear was the tribute for the emperor of China in the dynasty history. Especially, th snow pear planted and cultivated in Haidong District, on the eastern shore of Erhai Lake, is one of the finest pear species. It is round as a ball, green in peel and white in pulp. A big one can weigh one fourth of a kilogram. With rich sugar content, apple-acid, protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B and C, the pear is juicy and sweet, and has the quality of promoting the production of body fluid and quenching a thirst. It moistens the throat and relieves a cough. In Haidong District, there has a pear planting area of 50,000 mu, an annual output of snow pear is averagely 3,000 tons, and the maximal output can reach 7,500 tons.
