Poyang Lake lies in the northern part of Jiangxi Province, It is the largest fresh lake in China. Poyang Lake covers 3,583 square kilometers and has an annual average water depth of 8.4 meters. Poyang is key area of national freshwater production, and It is a home to 140 varieties of fish and around 600 other animals. Among these fishes, about 10 kinds of fishes, such as carp, crucian carp, chub, bighead carp, herring, grass carp, Elopichthys bambusa and white fish, are of greater industrial value. Their annual total yield is over 100,000 tons, ranking first among the province. Besides, there are many kinds of shellfish, shrimp, crab, waterfowl, lotus root and plenty of aquatic grass.
Poyang county is named by Poyang Lake, because it possesses a half area of whole lake. In 2008, Poyang County had more than 50 aquatic breeding, processing and circulation enterprises, and built high-quality aquatic products breeding bases for crab, mandarin fish, sea bass, freshwater shrimp and other products; the annual aquaculture production was more than 110,000 tons, the total fishery production value reached RMB 1.8 billion yuan, fishery products are mainly exported to Canada, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Spain, Japan and other countries.
