Liaocheng ranks first in the varieties and output of vegetables in Shandong Province. The cultivating area of mushrooms leads in China with area of 12 million square metres. Shenxian County is famous as “Cradle of Twin-spore Mushrooms and Muskmelon”.

The Dongchangfu District of Liaocheng City is a concentrated area in mushroom production in Shandong Province. Dongchangfu District started to produce mushroom in 1975, mainly export to Japan. At present, this district mainly produces Pleurotus ostreatus.

The main Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation methods adopt the semi-underground winter heating type vinyl-house and arched vinyl-house vertical cultivation. The winter heating type vinyl-house has in general a floor space of 40*8.5 square meters.

In 2002, 500 administrative villages out of 994 administrative villages produce mushroom. The number of mushroom production vinyl-houses has already reached 19,000, with a total mushroom output of 0.114 million tons. The Liangshui Township is a specialized township in producing Pleurotus ostreatus.

The whole township has over 4000 vinyl-houses and an annual Pleurotus ostreatus output of 24,000 tons. The Yansi Township has 54 administrative villages and each village produces Pleurotus ostreatus. In 2002, the township had a total Pleurotus ostreatus output of 24,000 tons.
