The Xiluodu hydropower project is the China's second-largest hydropower station. Construction on the Xiluodu project, second only to the Three Gorges Project in China, started in 2003 on the Yangtze River's upper reaches. The project is being undertaken by the China Three Gorges Project Corp (CTGPC), a state-owned hydropower investor and owner of the Three Gorges Dam. The dam, costing 67.5 billion yuan, is expected to be operational in 2015.

Xiluodu Hydropower Station is a major west-to-east electricity transmission project and an important move to develop China's resource-rich but poor western region.Located between Yongshan county of Yunnan Province and Leibo county of Sichuan Province, Xiluodu hydropower station is designed to generate 12.6 million kilowatts of electricity.

The station stemmed the turbulent Jinsha River in November 2007, and the first generating unit will be installed in June 2012. The entire project will be completed in 2015 and will cost RMB50.34 billion. If completed, the Xiluodu Dam will be the third largest dam in the world and a key component of the Jinsha project.
