Ordos solar power plant, the world's largest solar power plant in China, is a two-gigawatt plant in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, which will cover a staggering 25-square miles, cost billions of dollars and power 3 million Chinese homes. The solar farm would cover an area as large as two Jurong Islands, and would be about thirty times larger than existing solar power stations operating in Europe. Furthermore, the power generated here would equal the power generated by two nuclear plants,
The solar facility is to be built in four phases over a decade and supply power to three million Chinese homes, The first phase of the Ordos solar power plant will be a 30-megawatt "demonstration" project that will see construction begin by June 1, 2010. The second and third phases will be 100-megawatt and 870-megawatt projects, expected to be completed by the end of 2014, while the fourth phase will be a 1,000-megawatt facility tipped to be completed by end 2019.
