The Fangchenggang (Hongsha) Nuclear Power Project is located at Beibu Bay, a new economic zone near Bailong in the coastal city of Fangchenggang in the Guangxi Autonomous Region (close to the Vietnam border in south China).
Following a $3.1 billion agreement signed in July 2006 for construction of the first two units, the first stage (two 1000 MWe units out of six planned) of the plant was approved by NDRC in October 2008. CPI is keen to see this proceed, site works have been undertaken and first concrete is expected at the end of 2009. Guangxi Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., a joint venture between China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (61%) and Guangxi Investment Group (39%), is responsible for the construction and operation. The first unit is expected to begin commercial operation in 2014.
