The Cainan oilfield, located in the eastern Junggar Basin, is China's first million-ton uncompartmentalized desert oilfield. It was discovered in 1991 and put into operation in 1995. The annual output has reached 1.483 million tons. The oil field area is 16-km east-to-west, 6.6-km north-to-south. The oil field is in a continental desert area with many fixed and semi-fixed crescent shaped dunes which are 10- to 20-m high. The temperature can reach a maximum of 42°C in the summer and -42°C in the winter.
At present, accumulative production oil volume of Cainan oilfield is 10 million tons, production operation cost is 80-95 RMB per ton, accumulative profit reaches 10 billion RMB which is more than six times the total investment of the oilfield.
