Tokyo shares close higher on upbeat U.S. economic outlook

Tokyo shares closed higher Wednesday after the U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell provided an upbeat assessment on the U.S. economy in his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 96.83 points, or 0.43 percent, from Tuesday at 22,794.19.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 6.16 points, or 0.35 percent, higher at 1,751.21.

Gainers were led by oil and coal product, transportation equipment and precision instrument issues.

The day's turnover was around 2,167.0 billion yen (19.18 billion U.S. dollars).
