Ford Motor Co. announced on its website on Wednesday that it sold 2.04 million new vehicles in the United States in 2020, down 15.6 percent from 2.42 million sold in 2019.
The U.S. automaker sold 542,749 new vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2020, down 9.8 percent from 601,862 sold in the same period of 2019. Ford estimates that while fleet sales in the fourth quarter went down 26.3 percent, retail sales went up 2.7 percent.
A bright spot for Ford was its SUV sales. Ford SUV sales increased by 4 percent for the fourth quarter and went down only 9.7 percent for 2020.
"Fourth quarter represented an inflection point at Ford in our transition from cars to a much greater focus on iconic trucks, SUVs and electric vehicles to better serve our customers," said Andrew Frick, vice president of Ford sales for the United States and Canada, in a statement. "We are well positioned to see the benefits of our focused efforts throughout 2021."
