Production in Germany's industry in 2020 fell 8.5 percent year-on-year, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Monday.
In December, production stagnated compared with the previous month, after recovering for seven consecutive months since April.
Industrial output in December last year was still 3.6 percent below February, the month before restrictions were imposed in Germany as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Destatis.
Germany's industry was able to further increase its production in December "despite the tightened lockdown measures," although there was a "noticeable decline in the construction sector," the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) said on Monday.
Industrial production, manufacturing excluding energy and construction, increased 0.9 percent in December from the previous month, while construction output decreased 3.2 percent, according to Destatis.
"However, the further outlook for industrial activity remains subdued in view of the general pandemic and due to supply bottlenecks in the semiconductor industry," BMWi noted.
