Netherlands' unemployment shoots up in April

The number of people in paid employment in The Netherlands fell by 160,000 to 8.9 million in April, Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics CBS announced on Wednesday.

This is the largest decline in a month since 2003, the first year for which monthly figures were available. The decrease was the largest among young people, with more than 100,000, according to the CBS.

The number of unemployed in April was 314,000, an increase of about 41,000, including 25,000 young people. The country's unemployment rate stood at 3.4 percent in the month, compared with 2.9 percent in March, it said.
