Taiwan's CPI moves up 0.66 pct in April

Taiwan's inflation level continued to move up mildly in April, as the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose 0.66 percent from a year earlier, statistics showed Tuesday.
The year-on-year increase in April shook off fears of possible deflation in the island, according to the statistical agency.
Authorities attributed the mild increase in CPI to higher prices of vegetables, eggs, fuel and tourism fees.
The core CPI that excludes fruit, vegetables and energy rose 0.59 percent year on year in April, while the wholesale price index (WPI) went up 0.58 percent from a year earlier, data showed.
Among the components of the CPI calculations, vegetable prices in April went up 21.13 percent year on year, while egg prices jumped 14.66 percent in the month.
Fruit prices recorded a sharp decline in the month, down 11.09 percent from the previous year.
On a monthly basis, the April CPI rose 0.75 percent from that in March, while the WPI went up 0.4 percent.
For the January-April period, the CPI rose 0.4 percent year on year, while the WPI increased 0.64 percent.
From January to March, the CPI rose 0.18 percent, 0.23 percent and 0.58 percent, respectively, after a year-on-year deflation of 0.05 percent in December 2018, data showed.
