Malaysia inflation rises 1.6 pct in January

Malaysia's inflation, as measured by consumer price index (CPI), rose 1.6 percent year on year in January on higher petrol price, official data showed Friday.

Malaysian Statistics Department said in a statement that the increase was driven by the index of transport which increased by 3.9 percent due to higher average petrol price.

Meanwhile, food and non-alcoholic beverages index, which accounted close to 30 percent in the CPI weighs, rose 0.9 percent.

Miscellaneous goods and services index rose 2.5 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels grew 1.7 percent; education and communication increased by 1.7 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively.

On a monthly basis, CPI grew 0.1 percent as compared to December last year.
