China UnionPay sees higher online payments during holiday

Chinese card payment giant China UnionPay saw its online transactions soar during the eight-day holiday that ended Thursday.

China UnionPay's online payments from Oct. 1 to Oct. 8 hit 2.52 trillion yuan (about 371.68 billion U.S. dollars), with the daily payment average up 8.3 percent year on year.

With COVID-19 prevention measures in place, Chinese people enjoyed the National Day holiday that began on Oct. 1. The traditional week-long holiday coincided with the Mid-Autumn Festival this year, extending the holiday to eight days.

Shopping, traveling and catering were the main areas of holiday consumption. On the first day of the holiday, payments through the China UnionPay network exceeded 330 billion yuan, up 15.5 percent over the same day last year.

China UnionPay is the country's largest bank card payment processor, and UnionPay cards are accepted in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide.
