Ukraine to conduct stress tests for 25 biggest banks

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), the country's central bank, said on Thursday it will conduct stress tests this year for 25 biggest banks working in Ukraine.

The NBU will use the tests' results to evaluate capital adequacy and financial strength of the banks under different scenarios, including the negative ones, the central bank said in a statement.

Should the banks fail the test, they will be required to build up adequate capital levels by the end of the year,according to the NBU.

The central bank estimated that 25 largest Ukrainian banks together hold about 93 percent of the country's banking sector assets.

Last year, the Ukrainian banking system posted a consolidated loss of 938 million U.S. dollars.
