China's Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Development Index, based on a survey of 3,000 SMEs, edged down 0.2 points from the previous month to 89.2 in February, the latest industry data showed.
The dip followed a three-month rising streak and dragged the index down to a level lower than that of the same period last year, said the China Association of Small and Medium Enterprises.
The association attributed the decrease to February's Spring Festival break, sporadic COVID-19 outbreaks, price rebound of raw materials, and expensive financing.
The sub-indexes for industry, construction, transportation, postal services, and real estate, as well as wholesale and retail, retreated from a month ago, while those for computer software and wholesale and retail increased. The sub-index of social services remained flat.
In light of growing uncertainties and challenges both at home and abroad, the industry group urged the introduction of pro-growth policies, calling for targeted measures to enhance commodities price monitoring and regulation, stabilize energy and raw materials supplies, and cut fees and taxes.
