Ecuador's capital Quito, the city hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in the South American country, plans to fully reactivate tourism once its population is immunized against the disease in early 2021, Mayor Jorge Yunda said Monday.
Tourism is one of the city's leading revenue generators, Yunda noted in an interview with local TV station Teleamazonas. "We have to move to welcome our own and foreigners from abroad to develop a tourism theme in the capital city, which I believe is the fastest way to reactivate the economy," he said.
The mayor said he is confident that there would be an immunization campaign in the capital in the first three months of 2021.
Quito has registered 65,368 COVID-19 cases as of Monday, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
