Chinese stocks close higher on Wednesday

Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.42 percent to 3,457.07 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.94 percent higher at 14,398.38 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 788.2 billion yuan (about 121.5 billion U.S. dollars), up from 764.6 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Companies in the baijiu (a Chinese liquor) and coal sectors were among the biggest winners, while stocks related to digital currency and agricultural planting led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.16 percent to close at 3,050.58 points.
