The unemployment rate in Brazil dropped to 14.3 percent in the three-month period through October, falling for the first time this year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said in a report on Tuesday.
The jobless rate grew 2.7 percentage points from a year ago and rose 0.5 percentage point from the previous three months this year.
According to the report, the number of unemployed Brazilians in the three months to October stood at 14.1 million, up by almost a million, or 7 percent, over the May-July period and 13.7 percent higher than a year ago.
The working population was 84.3 million, a 2.8 percent increase over the May-July period, but 9.8 million fewer than the same period last year.
"This scenario may be related to a recovery, to the return (to work) of people who were quarantining," the report said.
Average earnings stood at 2,529 reals (485 U.S. dollars), roughly unchanged compared to the previous three months and 5.8 percent higher than a year ago, the IBGE said.
Employment in Brazil this year is under strain as the COVID-19 pandemic weighs on the country's economy.
