A glitch in the IP address system of Latvia's leading Internet services provider Lattelecom left tens of thousands of subscribers without Internet on Saturday night, the company's representatives informed on Sunday.
IT experts managed to locate the problem and resolve it by the early hours of Sunday as Lattelecom gradually resumed its services, which also include web-based interactive television.
Lattelecom representatives said in a statement that shutdowns of this scale cause a prolonged system overload and that it therefore took several hours to renew the services to all clients.
The glitch in the IP address distribution system affected an estimated 80,000 Lattelecom clients. As the disruption began, a high number of people simultaneously tried to reach the company's helpline or access its website, causing an overload of these communication lines as well.
Although Lattelecom said its services were fully restored, some complaints were still coming in on Sunday.
