Sri Lanka's producer prices up 7.7 pct in August

Sri Lanka's Producer's Price Index (PPI) rose 7.7 percent in August, the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) said Thursday.

The PPI, which measures changes in prices received by producers of goods and services, stood at 144.5 for August 2020 compared to 134.2 for August 2019.

The PPI for the agriculture sector grew 24.9 percent, while manufacturing and electricity and water supply saw PPI growth of 5.1 and 8.3 percent respectively.

The PPI for agricultural activities of "growing crops" and "farming animals" grew 25.7 percent and 9.5 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, the PPI for manufacturing activities of "rubber and plastics", "wearing apparel, dressing, and dyeing of fur" and "food products and beverages" grew 10.6 percent, 10.5 percent, and 10.3 percent respectively.

"Generation and distribution of electricity" saw PPI rise 10 percent, while PPI for "collection, purification, and distribution of water" rose 5.2 percent.

Sri Lanka's DCS calculates the PPI based on prices received by 376 manufacturing and utility-related establishments, 331 Divisional Secretariat Divisions, the Ceylon Electricity Board, and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.
