Tokyo stocks lose ground in morning on concerns over virus resurgence

Tokyo stocks lost ground Friday morning as concerns over a resurgence of COVID-19 cases at home and abroad stoked worries about the global economic recovery from the pandemic being hampered.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 52.55 points, or 0.23 percent, from Thursday to 22,476.74.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 9.87 points, or 0.63 percent, at 1,547.37.

Mining, securities house, and oil and coal product issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
