Tokyo stocks close higher as overseas equities gain, Dow's down

Tokyo stocks closed higher on Tuesday as investor sentiment was bolstered by a rise in overseas equity markets and the Dow Jones index snapping a four-day losing streak.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 140.40 points, or 0.64 percent, from Monday to 21,952.40.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 11.96 points, or 0.73 percent, to finish at 1,644.16.
Marine transportation, insurance, mining and information communication-linked issues comprised notable gainers by the close of play.
