U.S. industrial production up 0.1 pct in October

U.S. industrial production edged up by 0.1 percent in October, as a steady gain for manufacturing outweighed decreases elsewhere, the Federal Reserve said Friday.
Industrial production, a measure of manufacturing, mining and utility output, increased for the fifth consecutive month in October, as manufacturing output rose 0.3 percent, while mining and utilities output declined 0.3 percent and 0.5 percent respectively.
Total industrial production was 4.1 percent higher in October than it was a year earlier.
The overall index is now reported to have advanced at an annual rate of 4.7 percent in the third quarter, appreciably above the gain of 3.3 percent reported initially, the Fed said.
The Fed said recent hurricanes lowered the level of industrial production by a small amount in both September and October, less than 0.1 percent per month.
