Meaning "green city" in Mongolia language, Hohhot is the capital of Inner
Mongolian Autonomous Region. With an altitude of around 1000 meters, it stands
centrally in Inner Mongolia, to the north being Yin Mountain, to the south being
Yellow River. Hohhot is a beautiful city with brilliant folk custom and modern
development to the north of the Great
Wall.
With a total population of 2.12 million by 2001, Hohhot is a 400-year-old
city, which was listed as one of China's
Historic and Cultural Cities approved by State Council. The city boasts lots of
precious historical sites like Dazhao Temple, Zhaojun Tomb, etc. Every summer during
Mongolian's traditional festival – Naadam, lots of games will be sponsored, for
example, Mongolian wrestling, horse racing and archery. It is one of the best
times to see the local folk culture.
Difference in temperature between day and night varies much, for example, the
temperature in the day is 20¡æ lower than that of night. Although in summer, it
is better to take coat. The winter is cold and lasts for a long time, January
being the coldest. The average temperature throughout the year is 8 ¡æ
Because of its unique nature condition, dairy industry in Hohhot has been
developing in a rapid pace in recent years, which makes it a famous "Dairy Capital of China".
