The global flower trade has grown significantly in the past decades. In the 1950s, the global trade of flowers was less than US$3 billion. By 1992 it had grown to US$100 billion. In recent years, the industry has grown six percent annually, and global trade volume in 2003 was US$101.84 billion. At present, China is the first large country in the flower planting area and output in the world, the flower planting area has reached 1/3 of the world's total production area. In the past 10 years, flower industry has entered into a rapidly developing period in China. As of 2005, total area of flower production has been more than 600,000 hectares in China mainland (total area of greenhouse has reached 28,600 hectares), Flower output value of nearly 5.8 billion dollars, and the number of flower markets has reached 2586, flower production enterprises have been 64908. Among the enterprises, there are 8334 enterprises which area of flower production has reached 3 hectares and annual sale has been 600,000 dollars. Meanwhile, the turnover of international trade of Chinese flower products has been increasing rapidly. Especially in 2004 ~ 2006, it was at an annual rate of more than 20%. In 2006, Chinese Flower export has reached at 101.75 million dollars and imports at 69.42 million dollars. The strong growth shows a rapidly development and great potential in flower industry in China. Yunnan, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong, Fujian and Shanghai are the key flower and plant exporters of China, their combined export volume accounted for 87 per cent of the nation's sector as a whole in 2003. Yunnan, the largest flower production base in China, takes up 40 percent of the country's flower production industry. Japan, Netherlands, South Korea, United States and Hong Kong, China were able to consolidate their lead in the top 5 of export countries and regions. And the main export of flowers were still pot plants, cut flowers and seedlings. While Netherlands, Thailand, South Korea, Chile and Taiwan, China were the top 5 import countries and regions. And the main import of flowers were still bulbs and seedlings.
