China is the largest tobacco-producing country in the world, with its leading leaf tobacco products being flue-cured tobacco and burley. According to statistical data from Universal Corportation, China produced 1.945 billion kilograms of flue-cured tobacco (green kgs) in 2006, accounting for 50.5% of the world's total flue-cured tobacco (green kgs) output of 3.851 billion kilograms in the year.
It is estimated that China's flue-cured tobacco output in 2007 could remain on a par with the 2006 level while the world's total flue-cured tobacco output could reach 3.932 billion kilograms, with China's proportion expected to decline slightly to 49.46%.
In 2006, China's burley (green kgs) output reached 25 million kilograms, ranking the eighth in the world, while the world's total burley output reached 733 million kilograms, with China's proportion in it standing at 3.41%.
It is estimated that China's burley output in 2007 could remain on a par with the 2006 level while the world's total burley output in the year could slightly decline to 701 million kilograms. China's proportion is expected to rise slightly to 3.56%.
For many years, leaf tobacco has been an essential part of China's tobacco exports. But the annual exports quantities were small. From 2001 to 2005, tobacco exports totaled only 67 million kilograms, annual average was 13.4 million kilograms, which accounted for only 6.7% of the world's total leaf tobacco exports in the five-year period.
